I received these
buttons as a gift from an antique market and I’m always looking for new ways to
integrate them into my life and crafts.
I love the look of the vintage buttons
in the mason jar and sometimes I just use that as a decoration around my apartment.
When I first got the button jar, the buttons were organized into layers by
colour and I thought that was a really smart idea! It makes the whole container
look really sharp and more enticing for buyers.
You can get buttons
from many different places like antique stores, vintage markets, dollar store
and any craft outlet. Or ask your Grandma (that’s what I did), she probably has
a couple containers in a closet somewhere :)
I’m personally drawn
towards vintage buttons as they’ve been pre-loved and have a bit more
character. If you’re doing a cheaper craft or you’re painting over the buttons,
I would suggest buying your buttons from the dollar store so you can save your
good buttons.
Buttons are a huge collectable item in the antique world. They date back to the 17th century in Japan and eventually made their way to the West in the 19th century. Through the years, they gone through many different style changes and have been made with various materials such as ceramic, fossilized coal, glass, metal and enamel. When using buttons in a craft, hot glue will usually do the trick. If you’re going to be using them day to day and need it to be a bit more secure, like on a necklace or ornament, I would suggest sewing it on with a needle and thread. You know, that’s sort of what they were made for.
